International sources account for a substantial share of research and innovation funding in Kenya. This reliance on international collaboration is also reflected in the country’s scientific output: more than 80% of scientific publications authored by Kenyan researchers involve international co-authorship.

In this context, cooperation with the European Union plays a significant role, particularly through Kenya’s participation in European research programmes such as Horizon Europe and the Africa Initiatives I, II, and III. During the 2021–2025 period, Kenya ranked second among African countries, after South Africa, in terms of funding received through these initiatives.

Regarding infrastructures, a flagship project currently under development is Konza Technopolis, a smart city designed to host data centers, research hubs, technology companies, and universities. It is being built in collaboration with international partners.

Kenyan research institutes play an active role in national and international academic and research bodies, operating at both continental and global levels. Domestically, the Kenya National Academy of Sciences brings together experts and researchers from various disciplines, fostering dialogue among the scientific community, public institutions, and the private sector. Nairobi is also home to the African Academy of Sciences, established through the initiative of Kenyan entomologist Thomas R. Odhiambo, who brought together 22 African scientists in Trieste during a meeting of what was then known as the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 1985.

Kenya has a well-established legal and institutional framework for the protection of intellectual property rights. Key institutions include the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), which is responsible for the registration and protection of patents, trademarks, and industrial designs; the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO), which oversees copyright protection and enforcement; the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), which administers the protection of plant breeders’ rights; and the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), which is responsible for combating counterfeiting and enforcing anti-counterfeiting legislation.

The State Department for Science, Research and Innovation is actively promoting scientific outreach and raising public awareness regarding the central role of research in the country’s development.
