The Ambassador of Italy to Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, officially opened the Italian Cuisine Week in the world in the prestigious setting of the National Museum in Nairobi, inaugurating the exhibition “At the Table with Italy: 100 Years of Taste Innovation” by the “Garum” Library and Museum of Cuisine, in collaboration with the international historical menus association “Associated Menus.” The opening, which was followed by a tasting of Italian food and wine excellence and embellished with historic models of the Ferrari and Alfa Romeo car manufacturers, was attended by Kenya’s Minister of Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano with other Kenyan authorities, the curator of the exhibition, Alessia Autuori of Glocal Project, Dominique Lora, art historian and lecturer at Rome’s “La Sapienza” University, and Olympic marathon runner Benson Kipruto, fresh winner of this year’s New York City Marathon, coached by Italian coach Claudio Berardelli, participated as a testimonial.

The Ambassador Del Monaco recalled how the Italian tradition of food and drink constitutes not only a heritage, but also an element of cohesion and sharing in the world and increasingly expresses with the passage of time “a collective language made of identity, territoriality, culture and social relations.” With this in mind, as the exhibition opened to the public in the museum’s halls, a sculptural work by Italian artist Tommaso Cascella, who was also present at the ceremony, was also unveiled, created in one week at the St.Kizito Vocational Training Institute in Nairobi. It is a mahogany table supported by iron frames and joints titled “Arch, Bridge, Balance, Rainbow of Peace and Work,” which symbolizes the harmonious union between the two countries and which the master, a guest of an artistic residency in the capital, wanted to donate to the Italian Embassy.

The initiatives of the Italian Cuisine in the World Week in Kenya will continue, between Nairobi, Malindi and Watamu, with wine and cooking tastings and master classes and a cooking show by Giallo Zafferano.
