Italy and Kenya have both emphasized the importance which the San Marco Project, whose activities are centered around the Broglio Space Centre near Malindi, represents in the relations between both Countries. The scientific cooperation between Kenya and Italy encompasses 50 years of experience and constitutes a common heritage in which to root future collaborations.
This was the spirit in which the Joint Steering Committee, the consultative body between the parties envisaged in that framework, met in Nairobi last Friday. It was chaired on the Kenyan side by the Secretary of Administration of the Ministry of Defence, KirituWamai, and on the Italian side by Minister Plenipotentiary Marco Claudio Vozzi, Deputy Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It was agreed that the negotiations for a new Agreement would continue in the coming weeks.
In the previous week the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence, Mutea Iringo, paid a visit to the Base during which he met with the Italian and Kenyan personnel working there. He also had the chance to visit the various installations, including the platforms from which up to 1988 rockets were launched.
