Huge success for the fourth training session within the project “European Union Police Service 2011 – 2013” (EUPST 2011-2013), recently concluded in Nairobi at the Humanitarian Peace Support School (which is part of the International Peace Support Training Centre) at Embakasi. Among the many authorities present at the closing ceremony, the Principal Secretary of the Kenyan Ministry of Defence, Amb. Juma.

The initiative has benefited from EU funds to train units entrusted with the mission to manage crisis, in a civilian framework, under the aegis of the United Nations, the African Union and the European Union. The training modules included sessions in the management of the HQ of the international Police mission, of public order, of forensic investigations, of the activities of Quick reaction units, of protection services, of clearing explosives, as well as on human rights, gender balance and the protection of vulnerable people (particularly women, children and the elderly). The activity was conducted by the Italian Carabinieri, who provided 60 trainers and support personnel under the leadership of General Sebastiano Comitini, and involved 385 police units originating from African countries (Kenya, Rwanda, Camerun, Uganda and Sudan), from the EU (France, Spain and the Netherlands), from extra-EU donors (the USA), as well as experts and observers from International Organisations.

The initiative falls under the wider project “EUPST 2011-2013” sponsored by the EU and developed by an international consortium of which the Carabinieri hold the leadership. The Kenyan session follows two similar activities by the Spanish Guardia Civil and by the French Gendarmerie Nationale. In 2014 three more will be conducted: in Camerun by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the Netherlands by the Marechaussee, and a final one by the Carabinieri at the Centre of Excellence for Stability Police Units (CoESPU) at Vicenza.
