Italy celebrates architect Cairati, who designed Fort Jesus in Kenya

Cairati

The Italian Ambassador to Kenya, Vincenzo Del Monaco, during an event organized at the archaeological site and museum of Fort Jesus in Mombasa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, unveiled, together with the Kenyan Minister of Culture, Arts, and Heritage, Hanna Wendot Cheptumo, a plaque dedicated to Giovanni Battista Cairati, the Italian architect who designed the fort in the 16th century during Portuguese rule.

To celebrate the “Italian soul” of this historic national monument, the embassy also organized, in collaboration with the National Museums of Kenya and the MedOr Foundation, a live music performance and video mapping on the ancient walls of the fort, which took shape through the artistic project titled “Sincronia,” curated by Isabella Indolfi and staged by the Italian Cultural Institute in Nairobi.

Performing in the extraordinary and evocative setting of Fort Jesus was the Nova Media Duo, composed of Italians Federica Sorba and Eduard Tampu, accompanied by Kenyan saxophonist Juma Tutu.

Prior to the event, Del Monaco visited the Italian Navy’s missile frigate, Emilio Bianchi, which had docked in Mombasa as part of the European Union’s anti-piracy mission, Eunavfor Atalanta, for which it currently serves as the command headquarters.
