Translation and legalization of documents

How to get documents translated

The Embassy of Italy in Nairobi does not perform translations; interested parties are invited to:

A– obtain such service from translators known to this Embassy – Translation services – Ambasciata d’Italia Nairobi

or to

B- contact the nearest Honorary Consulate – The Consular Network – Ambasciata d’Italia Nairobi for information/instructions on the procedures to follow.

Please note that translated documents must be endorsed by this Embassy/Honorary Consulate before presentation/delivery to recipients both locally and in Italy.

How to notarise (legalise) certificates issued by the Kenyan Authorities for use in Italy

The applicant will need to:

  1. obtain a certificate of authenticity issued by the Kenya Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora for each document he/she intends to submit in Italy. This service is available through the E-Citizen Portal available at the following link – Welcome (ecitizen.go.ke);
  2. translate the documents using the procedure mentioned above – “How to get my documents translated”;
  3. deliver the documents by following the instructions in “How to Submit/Deliver documents for processing”.

NOTE – Regarding marriage certificates issued by local Authorities, this Embassy can  only process “Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate” certificates.

How to Submit/Deliver documents for processing

  1. Direct delivery to the Embassy in Nairobi.

Interested parties should deliver to the Embassy Security Desk a sealed envelope addressed to the Consular Office enclosing the following documents:

    1. the original certificate issued by the local Authorities;
    2. the translation of the certificate mentioned in point a);
    3. the Certificate of Authentication issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kenya – the document is to be printed from the E-Citizen Portal in color;
    4. copy of an identity document of the holder of the documents;
    5. a telephone number and email address.

 The office will contact the person concerned for follow-up.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • This Embassy and Consular Network is competent only for translations from English to Italian and vice versa. Documents in third languages must be endorsed and legalized by our Representation where the document is produced:
    • example 1 – marriage certificate issued by the Dakar Authorities in French then translated locally into English and subsequently into Italian cannot be accepted: the document will have to be translated from French to Italian and endorsed by our Representation in Dakar;
    • example 2 – certificate issued by third Country where the primary language is English. If legalization is required for the purposes of transcription, recognition, etc., the document must be legalized by our Representation in the Country where the document was produced; if the State that issued the document is a signatory to the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 (Apostille Convention), the document must be apostilled in that Country.
